COURSE: ART I

MITCHELL – INSTRUCTOR

OVERVEIW:

Art I is designed to reinforce and build on knowledge and skills developed at the elementary and middle school levels. It is the foundation level for art study throughout high school. The course is primarily devoted to systematic and deliberate presentations of various art processes, procedures, theories and historical developments. Students will have experiences in producing two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks. This course emphasizes the study of the elements of art and principles of design, color theory, vocabulary, art criticism, art history and safety in the art room. The approach to art experiences during this time is experimental in terms of materials. Students are provided a strong foundation in design, drawing and vocabulary in a teacher-structured environment. Problem solving and decision-making are emphasized throughout Art I. Other course requirements include: class fee, acquisition of personal supplies, attending two fine arts events over the course of the year and the sale of coupon books.

GRADES:

Participation

Participation will include good behavior, strong effort and engaging in class critiques, discussions, and daily activities. Communication is an important factor in the understanding of any art process. Participation grades will be given weekly throughout the semester and will include bell work.

Assignments/Projects

Assignments and projects are the core of the learning process. The assigned work reflects the participation of the student and demonstrates a projection of retained information.

Sketchbook and Bell work

Sketchbooks and bell work will be used most days. This might include vocabulary, goals for the day and guiding questions. The sketchbook is an important element of the course because it helps the student to track progress, record ideas for assignments and to act as an active journal and study guide. The bellworkis for daily written assignments.

Quizzes

Quizzes will be given over vocabulary twice each nine weeks. By maintaining the sketchbook and class folder, communicating in class discussions and with other students, the quizzes will only help to build a greater understanding of art terminology and techniques.

Tests

Tests will cover vocabulary, artists, media and the art movements associated with the projects and assignments. The tests will be given at the end of each nine weeks.

All assignments are graded on a zero to 100 scale.
